About A Step Above Appliance Repair

At A Step Above Appliance Repair, we are a family-owned company committed to providing quality, trustworthy repairs at affordable prices. Mike began his career over 25 years ago and, in 2014, relocated the business to Lafayette, Indiana, where he and Jennifer continued offering high-quality services. Since moving, they've engaged with local networking groups, building valuable relationships and establishing themselves as a trusted presence in Greater Lafayette.

Our journey began with a moral checkup. Mike started in the industry as a driver/helper in his 20s, discovering his passion for appliance repair and honing his mechanical skills. After a management change at a family-owned company, he sought new opportunities. Falling in love with Greater Lafayette, Mike and Jennifer decided to launch their own company, focusing on exceptional customer service. Our mission is clear: customer satisfaction is our top priority. If you’re not happy, we’re not satisfied!

FAQ

  • How do I clean my fridge’s rubber gaskets?

Mike Says: Refrigerators and freezers have a lifespan of ten years or more. In order to enjoy the full lifespan, appliance owners must regularly check the rubber gaskets found on the doors of the refrigerator and freezer. You can scrub food and debris with soap and water and dry the rubber gaskets with a towel. This will allow the doors to seal tightly, trapping the cool air inside of the refrigerator.

  • How do I thoroughly clean a microwave?

Mike Says: Microwaves can be steam cleaned by placing water and lemon slices inside of a microwave-safe bowl. Let the bowl heat up in the microwave for a few minutes. The water vapor will allow you to wipe it down easier.

  • How do I keep my dishwasher smelling fresh?

Mike Says: Rinse your dishwater with one cup of vinegar weekly. Make sure you do not have any pots and plates in the appliance when you do this.

  • What’s the best way to clean my air conditioner filter?

Mike Says: You should be cleaning your air conditioner filters every two to four weeks for maximum airflow. If your filter is reusable, you should vacuum it to remove the dirt. If your filter is disposable, simply take the filter out and replace it with a new one.

  • Are crumbs in my toaster dangerous?

Mike Says: Crumbs in your toaster present a significant fire hazard if left unattended and overflowing! Depending on the amount of times you use a toaster, it would be beneficial to empty the crumb tray once week.

  • What’s the best way to clean stove spills?

Mike Says: Spilled food can easily prevent a burner from turning on. Clean the stove with a toothbrush and gently brush the spills from the igniter.

  • How important is it to change my water filter?

Mike Says: Over time, your water filter can easily clog up from trapping sediments. This makes it extremely difficult for water to pass through. It’s recommended that you change filters every 3-6 months (or before), especially if there is a change in water pressure and color.

  • Should I have my washing machine’s hoses checked?

Mike Says: Yes! This prevents floods or leaks in your laundry room. Make sure you are on the lookout for weak spots, cracks, and deformities. It is also wise to replace your hoses every five years.

  • What if my clothes aren’t fully drying?

Mike Says: If you are noticing that your clothes are still a bit damp or not fully warm after drying, you may need to unclog the lint filter. Use a stiff kitchen brush and scrub the filter with hot water and laundry detergent.

  • How do I keep my garbage disposal functioning well?

Mike Says: Place water and lemon slices in an ice tray and allow them to freeze. Once this is frozen, drop the ice cubes into your garbage disposal and turn your disposal on.

  • What’s a good way to clean my washing machine?

Mike Says: A mixture of lemon juice and baking soda is a terrific washing machine cleaner! Pour two tablespoons of baking soda in the detergent compartment and start a complete washing cycle with no clothes in the machine. You only need to use lemon juice if you find rust stains on the tank. Baking soda is able to remove the odor and any deposits from the tank. This method can be used once every two weeks.

  • How Do I Reduce the Chances of a Cooking Fire?

Mike Says: Don’t leave cooking food unattended, as they could easily start a fire!

Have working smoke detectors near the kitchen along with a functioning fire extinguisher

Keep flammable fabrics (potholders, clothing, dish towels) away from the heat source.
